You’ve had a long, hard day at work and all you want to do is put your feet up in front of the TV and relax for a while. But what happens when your family room carpet is sopping wet and your sofa is not much better, all because of a burst pipe or leaky hot water tank? Instead of panicking, hear are five things to do to keep things under control and return your home back to normal.

1) Eliminate the source.

The first thing you should do is find out where the water is coming from. Locate the shutoff valve for your water and turn it off, so your puddle doesn’t become a swimming pool – or worse. If you need an expert to fix or replace whatever broke or burst and made your home sopping wet, do that as well.

2) Call a restoration company.

Call and book an appointment with your local restoration company. Let them know exactly what is affected in your home, so they can guage how quickly they need to arrive. Make sure you know exactly what in the area is affected, such as a tile floor, carpet, or if the water has reached the walls. They might also have some tips to keep the damage contained to one area.

3) Turn off power to the affected area.

Find your fuse box and turn off the power to the affected area, especially if there are electrical plugs near the water. If you cannot discern which fuse is linked to the new pond in your home, turn off the master switch. Water conducts electricity very well, and electrocution is a very real possibility if the two meet.

4) Move valuables and documents.

Depending on where your leak or water damage is, try and salvage what you can from the mess – but only if the water you are dealing with is either from a water tank, dishwasher or the like. If it is sewage or dirty water that is your problem, stay away! This type of water can make you sick.

5) Contact your insurance company.

Contact your insurance company to see how much damage they will cover, and ask about any requirements they need to start a file. They may also need you to take pictures of the damage or send out an adjuster. Keep your receipts as well, as this is how the insurance company will reimburse you.

These five tips will help you deal with the aftermath of a burst pipe, leaky hot water tank or anything to deal with water damage. Messy and dangerous jobs are best left with the experts, such as the restoration company, as they have all the knowledge and experience needed to handle such things.
